This image separates itself in some significant ways from the common T&A pictures that I see. In this image, I see true artistic vision and technical mastery. I see planning, forethought, and skillful execution. I love the selective focus, and the sharp detail in the surfaces and folds of skin. The expert lighting renders rich detail, and the backlighting gives the image an almost mystical quality. The sexuality is downplayed by the framing and the position of the model, but the sensuality is heightened by the subject matter and the attention to detail. Certainly not something that one sees every day. My compliments for a job well done.
I feel like this work would be stronger if the model had hair. It feels as though the sexuality within the content of this piece wants to be taken as artistic, but because she is hairless it just comes back to the male gaze and it's ideas of what a vagina should be like.
I believe you have misunderstood the point of shaving the genital area. In the most male dominated time periods, all women have had hairy genitalia. The reason people choose to shave today has nothing to do with the male point of view. Women shave to increase hygiene and to make cunnilingus more pleasant for the partner, regardless of gender. Men also shave for the same reason, only in this case to make fellatio more pleasant.
My work is a representation of the beauty of the female genitalia, and I don't see this work as sexual.. I see it as sensual.
But hair does not equal non-hygenic. I just think if an artist talks about the beauty of the female genitalia, they should include all of the things that make it beautiful, including the naturally grown hair. As for having nothing to do with a male point of view, you are a male taking a picture of what you deem beautiful. That is fine, but to say that the male gaze has nothing to do with it is short-sighted. Beauty is subjective and being a male artist you can't help but insert your own views into your work.
This is true, and as such this work represents what I find beautiful in the female genitalia. In my personal opinion, it looks better shaved or trimmed. Why so many chose to shave their respective genitalia is another debate that stray to far from the subject matter. In any way, I respect your opinion, and maybe I will find an unshaven model some day and take pictures of him/her.
